There are certain moments in your career that hit a little different.
This is one of them.
I’m honored (and honestly pretty fired up) to share that I’ve been recognized as a NetApp SME Elite – Exam Developer.
8+ Years Behind the Scenes
For the past 8+ years, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in NetApp Item Development Workshops (IDWs) — helping build the very exams that engineers, architects, and administrators take to validate their skills.
If you’ve ever taken a NetApp certification exam… there’s a chance you’ve seen something I helped write.
And that’s something I take seriously.
Our Goal Has Always Been Simple
When we sit down to write questions, we’re not trying to trick anyone.
We’re asking ourselves:
- Does this reflect real-world scenarios?
- Is this something an engineer would actually face?
- Is the question clear, fair, and understandable — even if English isn’t your first language?
- And most importantly…
👉 Would I feel good about answering this question on an exam myself?
Because at the end of the day, certifications should validate ability, not test-taking tricks.
What “SME Elite” Really Means
This badge isn’t just about time served.
It represents:
- Consistent contributions to exam development
- Helping shape the quality and direction of certifications
- Mentoring and coaching newer SMEs through the process
- Supporting NetApp Learning Services over the long term
To me, it’s recognition of the work that happens behind the scenes — the part most people never see.
Why This Matters
Certifications play a big role in our industry.
They help:
- Engineers grow their careers
- Companies validate skills
- Customers build confidence in the people designing their environments
So getting the questions right… really matters.
And I’ve always believed:
A good exam should feel like a reflection of real experience — not a guessing game.
Looking Ahead
I’m not slowing down anytime soon.
I’m excited to continue:
- Contributing to future NetApp exams
- Helping evolve certification content as technology changes
- Supporting the next generation of SMEs
- And tying this into everything I’m doing with my broader learning journey
(especially as I continue my Zero to VCAP path on the VMware side)
Final Thoughts
This one means a lot.
Not just because of the badge… but because of the journey behind it.
