When I committed to completing the VMware Cloud Foundation certification path, I knew I needed more than motivation. I needed structure.
My goal is to achieve VMware Certified Advanced Professional – VMware Cloud Foundation Administrator (VCAP-VCF Administrator) within six to seven months. That timeline requires discipline, repetition, and a clear progression from foundational knowledge to performance-based mastery.
If anyone would like to join me on this journey under the HumbledGeek banner, I’d be happy to form a study group so we can learn, share, and stay accountable together.
This post outlines the high-level plan. Beginning next week, I will break everything down into weekly execution aligned directly to the VCF Administrator exam blueprint.
Step 1 – Start With What’s Accessible (Free First)
Before investing heavily in paid training or hardware, I’m starting with the resources available to everyone.
For the first month, my focus will be:
• Broadcom digital learning modules
• VMware Cloud Foundation Hands-On Labs
• Certification blueprint alignment
• Structured note-taking and disciplined study
At this stage, I do not yet have the 8-node HPE vSAN Ready Node lab environment that I ultimately want to use for repeated VCF deployments. That hardware build is part of the longer-term plan and will become essential during advanced preparation.
That said, I don’t want anyone to think that dedicated enterprise hardware is required to follow along. Most of VMware Cloud Foundation can absolutely be virtualized in a nested lab environment, and Hands-On Labs provide excellent exposure to real workflows and operational tasks.
Real hardware is ideal, especially when preparing for a performance-based certification like VCAP; because it introduces nuances around physical networking, storage behavior, failure scenarios, and operational timing under load. In my opinion, repeated installs and teardowns on physical systems build stronger operational instinct.
But hardware is not a prerequisite for starting.
The early phases are about understanding architecture, workflows, and lifecycle. You can begin with free digital learning, virtual labs, and nested environments. As I move deeper into VCAP preparation, I will introduce the physical lab to build speed and muscle memory.
The journey begins with what is accessible today.
Step 2 – Earn VCP-VCF Administrator (Month 1)
Month 1 is dedicated to achieving:
VMware Certified Professional – VMware Cloud Foundation Administrator
This phase focuses on:
• VCF architecture fundamentals
• SDDC Manager concepts
• Management domain vs workload domains
• Lifecycle management basics
• NSX and vSAN in a VCF context
The objective here is operational familiarity and confidence with core components.
Step 3 – Shift to Architecture (Months 2–3)
Next, the focus shifts from “how to deploy” to “why design it this way.”
Target:
VMware Certified Professional – VMware Cloud Foundation Architect
This phase emphasizes:
• Design principles
• Workload domain planning
• Scaling strategy
• Networking models
• Upgrade and lifecycle implications
During this stage, I may introduce targeted Instructor-Led Training (ILT) if I identify specific knowledge gaps. ILT will be used strategically as an accelerator, not as a dependency.
Strategic Investments Along the Way
As part of this journey, I plan to make several deliberate investments:
• VMUG Advantage membership (not free), providing extended evaluation licenses for lab environments
• Select Broadcom Instructor-Led Training (ILT) courses, if needed
• Dedicated hardware for an 8-node vSAN Ready Node VCF lab environment
VMUG Advantage will allow me to build extended, realistic lab environments beyond what Hands-On Labs provide. While virtual labs are excellent for exposure, evaluation licensing enables more freedom in deployment and experimentation.
The physical hardware lab will become critical during VCAP preparation. Advanced certification requires repetition:
Install.
Validate.
Break.
Fix.
Rebuild.
Over and over again.
Performance-based exams reward instinct and speed. That only comes from hands-on repetition.
Step 4 – Prepare for VCAP-VCF Administrator (Months 4–6)
This phase is different. VCAP is performance-based.
Target:
VMware Certified Advanced Professional – VMware Cloud Foundation Administrator
Preparation will focus on:
• Deep troubleshooting
• Lifecycle break/fix scenarios
• Failure injection and recovery
• Log analysis
• NSX operational depth
• vSAN failure handling
• Timed lab drills
Every week during this phase will include:
- Deployment practice
- Failure injection
- Recovery without documentation
- Timed troubleshooting
The goal is to simulate real-world pressure.
Month 7 becomes a buffer for reinforcement or retake if necessary.
Weekly Commitment
To achieve this in six to seven months, I am committing to approximately:
• 6–8 hours of structured study
• 6–8 hours of lab work
• 2–3 hours of blogging and community engagement
Consistency matters more than intensity spikes.
Why Real Hardware Matters
VCAP is performance-based.
That means:
• Speed matters
• Muscle memory matters
• Troubleshooting under pressure matters
• Operational instinct matters
Videos build knowledge.
Labs build confidence.
Repetition builds mastery.
My goal is to progress from theory to execution — and eventually to instinct.
